Why Try to Lead a Moral Life?
Most religious people try to lead a moral life to escape the cycle of birth, death and rebirth, or the damnation of hell, or to gain entry to Paradise. If we do not believe in such things the only reason to lead moral lives is to make our lives the best we can.
This is what Epicurus sought to help us to do. He was concerned with "morality" in a more fundamental way than those concerned with escaping or attaining such illusions, and of "Ideals" such as a communist world, all of which seem to amount to mere words. Many people have been diverted from reality in this way.
He said of the virtues which make a moral life, “the virtues are natural adjuncts of the pleasant life, and the pleasant life is inseparable from them”.
